Alex TLC provides life-changing support and information to individuals and families affected by leukodystrophy—a group of rare genetic disorders that impact the central nervous system. With over 100 known types of leukodystrophy, many of which are extremely rare, Alex TLC is a beacon of hope for those navigating these challenging conditions.

Established in 2004, Alex TLC has grown into an internationally recognized center of excellence. They are the only UK-based charity offering support and resources to people affected by leukodystrophy worldwide.

How the Charity Began

Alex TLC was founded by Sara Hunt, a devoted single mother of two sons diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), the most common form of leukodystrophy. After receiving this life-altering diagnosis in 2001, Sara channeled her strength and determination into creating a positive future for her family.

For over a decade, Sara fought tirelessly to save her sons and preserve their sense of family. Despite her unwavering efforts, she lost her eldest son, Alex, in December 2012. In his memory, Sara established Alex TLC to ensure that no family facing leukodystrophy would feel alone.

Our Mission

Alex TLC is driven by four key goals:

  1. Support & Information: Ensure patients, families, and caregivers have access to the resources they need.

  2. Community Connection: Connect individuals and families affected by leukodystrophy to share experiences and support.

  3. Awareness & Education: Raise awareness and improve understanding of leukodystrophy through campaigns and events.

  4. Research Advancement: Fund medical research to improve treatments, enable early diagnosis, and increase life expectancy.
